For the past 11 years, the EDC supported nearly 300 communities as they implemented the federally funded Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) grant—an initiative that helps promote safe and healthy schools and communities. The Snapshot series captures the best practices of these grantees in achieving the initiative’s goals—including reducing violence and substance abuse, improving mental health service coordination, and creating a safe school environment—by focusing on key strategies for achieving lasting change. For each Snapshot, EDC staff conducted informal interviews with current and former Project Directors from selected sites to better understand the most important aspects of a successful approach. These case studies explore innovative practice and provide examples of how schools and communities nationwide can successfully implement prevention strategies to improve the health and success of youth.
