November, 2007 This report presents findings from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, specifically related to the association between depression and cigarette, alcohol, and other drug initiation among young adults ages 18–25. The report includes demographic data on individuals who had a major depressive episode in the past year, and reports the percentage of young adults who initiated alcohol, cigarette, or other drug use in the past year who also had a major depressive episode in the past year. The data on illicit drug use is further broken down by type of drug.
