Grantees to participate in Rural Mental Health Symposium

This symposium, sponsored by SAMHSA/CMHS, and taking place June 6-9 in Moran, Wyoming, will bring grantees, Federal representatives, and partner organizations together to explore promising practices for providing comprehensive community-based services for children with serious emotional disturbances and their families. Several SS/HS grantees will be attending and/or presenting at this event.

National Center staff will also be present, participating in several events, including a panel on funding rural mental health programs, a workshop on customizing mental health services to fit the needs of rural communities, and a workshop on successful coalition building. A summary of these presentations will be available at promoteprevent.org in mid-June.

Foundation funding for children's health: Recent trends
Foundation Funding for Children's Health, a report released this month by the Foundation Center , examines the growth and distribution of foundation giving for children's health between 1999 and 2003. The report provides profiles of leading grantmakers and analyses of funding distributions for public health and mental health, substance abuse, and access disparities. In addition, contributing editors from Grantmakers in Health, a nonprofit educational organization that advises foundations and corporate giving programs, highlight the principle trends influencing foundation support for children's health.

Cultural competence in school health programs - survey & resources
To build health programs that bring maximum benefit to all students, health programs at school must take into account the needs of their culturally diverse communities. The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools has compiled an interactive resource page to help school health professionals respond effectively to the impact of cultural differences in health and health care. The page includes several links to articles and toolkits on cross-cultural communication and racial and ethnic disparities. In addition, visitors to the resource page may post their own experiences to the site and fill out a survey on cross-cultural communication at their school.

The Grant Opportunities page http://www.promoteprevent.org/events/grant_opportunities/ is regularly updated with new announcements of available public and private grant competitions.

We regularly add to a detailed listing of conferences and events occurring within the Center and across the nation. Please visit the Events page for listings.
