Principal asks a school mental health counselor to share information about student who posted violent messages on Facebook

A student has been posting violent messages on his Facebook page. The school principal is told about the messages, but he cannot discipline the student because the messages don’t contain direct threats to the school or the students. Nonetheless, the principal and the staff are greatly concerned. The principal approaches the School Resource Officer (SRO), who is employed by the school, to express his concerns. The SRO agrees with the principal, but he says his hands are tied because no crime has been committed.
