Information Sharing in Criminal Justice-Mental Health Collaborations: Working with HIPAA and Other Privacy Laws

Individuals with mental illness are present in every aspect of the criminal justice system therefore many jurisdictions have developed policies that will allow criminal justice, mental health, and other government agencies  to share information and develop efficient policies. This resource examines factors that can prevent data from being shared between agencies and discuss a framework that can improve information sharing and clarify laws which deal with individual privacy, such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
