This brief concludes that harsh suspension and expulsion policies, which disproportionately impact students of color, can lead to poor health outcomes, crime and violence, drug use and mental health issues.  Policies designed to keep students in school, give them skills to navigate life's challenges, and help them understand the consequences of their behavior they find lead to improved health outcomes for students and communities.
