Integrating Sustainable School-wide Social and Emotional Learning into the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Framework
Cohort: 2006 SS/HS Grantees
Date: May 23–24, 2007
Location: Washington, D.C.
Description: During this meeting, participants were introduced to tools and participated in activities designed to help them to implement high-quality; sustainable, evidence-based social and emotional learning programming that is integrated into all aspects of schooling.

Strategic Planning for Sustainability
Cohort: 2005 SS/HS Grantees
Date: November 8–9, 2007
Location: Denver, CO
Audience: Project Directors with a leadership team from their partnership (with a representative from Law Enforcement, Juvenile Justice, Mental Health, and School District Administration).
Description: This two day workshop, co-sponsored by the National Center and the SS/HS Communication Teams, took place in Denver, CO for all FY 2005 sites. The training event included individual meetings with peer experts and experts, small group meetings with peers, and meeting time with TASs. The meeting also included presentations and work sessions on sustaining EBIs through evaluation and outcome data presented by the NET.

Latino Networking Group: Dropout Prevention

Many of you expressed concern about the dropout rate for Latino/Hispanic students in your districts. To address this matter, the National Center hosted a peer-to-peer telemeeting to discuss dropout prevention and share succesful strategies. The meeting began with a brief summary of current statistics and prominent theories for the disparities in high school dropout rates. The second part of the meeting focused on SOLUTIONS-–programs and strategies that work for at-risk Latino students. This was an opportunity to learn from each other, and participants' active contributions to the discussion fostered a richer learning experience for all. CASEL: Engaging School Administrators in Social and Emotional Learning
On January 24, 2007 the National Center hosted a teleconference entitled, “Engaging School Administrators in Social and Emotional Learning.” The teleconference provided information about Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools, identified challenges and concerns of garnering support from school administrators, and provided a networking opportunity for grantees. Reconnecting Youth

On Tuesday, February 27, grantees had the opportunity to discuss the challenges and successes around implementing Reconnecting Youth (RY). RY is a school-based prevention program for youth in grades 9 through 12 (ages 14–18) at risk for school dropout. Jennifer McCarthy, 2005 Project Director for Ketchikan, AK, and Janice Pointer, former 2004 Project Director for Bergen County, NJ, were on the call to share their experiences with this program. On Tuesday, February 13, 2007, the National Center hosted a follow-up peer-to-peer teleconference on Second Step, an evidence-based intervention. CASEL Teleconference

On March 14, we defined social and emotional learning (SEL) and discussed cutting-edge research on the link between SEL and student outcomes, with a particular focus on academics. The call addressed the potential impacts on educators who implement SEL programming (e.g., changes in instructional practices, decreased turn-over, increased morale, etc). This teleconference provided SS/HS sites with tools to engage partners in SEL/prevention programming as we explored how these research findings can be used to create a common language across partners and support the work of the SS/HS sites. WeGo Together for Kids (a 2005 SS/HS grantee) briefly shared how they are using SEL concepts to achieve the goals of their project.

Implementing Evidence-Based Interventions (EBIs) with Fidelity

On Thursday, March 22nd, presenter Wayne Harding, Ph.D., of Social Science Research & Evaluation, Inc. discussed the following topics: defining fidelity and adaptation; the advantages and disadvantages of replication versus adaptation; guidelines for adaptation; and ways to monitor fidelity across multiple program sites. Latino Networking Group Teleconference: Teenagers: Sexual Violence Prevention and Intervention Strategies

On Thursday, April 12, the Latino Networking Group hosted a presentation and discussion on the topic of prevention of prevention of sexual violence for adolescents. Stacy Rodriguez-Rennard, from BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center), presented prevention and intervention strategies aimed to help providers, school personnel, and the community in general to better understand a positive framework to best serve adolescents and to encourage understanding of sexuality within a context of health.

Every Day, Every Child - On Time, A System-Wide Strategy for Reducing Truancy & Improving Attendance

This was the first in a series of three teleconferences specially designed to address the concerns of law enforcement and juvenile justice partners in the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. Partners from the Hillsboro, OR SS/HS team presented on a new program that is currently being implemented to reduce truancy and improve attendance. Participants were then invited to discuss the successes and challenges of their own truancy programs. Presenters from the Hillsboro team included the Project Director, two Assistant Principals, the Director of Student Services, and the Director of the Washington County Juvenile Department.

Social and Emotional Learning in Action: An Interactive Discussion and Problem Solving Session

As with any initiative, implementing and sustaining social and emotional learning programming is challenging in today’s school setting. How can these and other challenges be addressed? What are some successes that can be shared from practical experience?

This teleconference, hosted by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) at the University of Illinois in partnership with the National Center, provided SS/HS sites with an opportunity to discuss challenges and successes of implementing and sustaining social and emotional learning programming. Project Directors from WeGo Together for Kids (West Chicago, Illinois) and Madison County School District (Rexburg, ID) shared their experiences and initiated a dialog among participants.

Best Practices for School Resource Officers

On Tuesday, May 15th, Technical Assistance Specialist John Rosiak moderated a discussion with Sgt. Tony Badilla, an SRO Supervisor from Yuma, AZ (a 2004 SS/HS Site). Presenters discussed the three main roles of the school resource officer (SRO) in the SS/HS Initiative. Other topics included the role of the law enforcement officer in schools and shared advice for SROs working with educators, mental health, and juvenile justice partners. Grantees had an opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback on their SRO programming.

Female Aggression and Violence

On August 9, 2007, Jan Stanton, Ph.D., Training and Coaching Institute Director at the Illinois Center for Violence Prevention, introduced participants to the research and literature in the field of Female Aggression and Violence. She discussed the unique social and environmental risk factors that impact girls’ involvement in aggression and violence, as well as characteristics of violence prevention programs that meet the social and developmental needs of girls. This teleconference was hosted by the Latino Networking Group, a subgroup of the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention.

Positive Beginnings for Families with Young Children: Primary Prevention Programs and Mental Health Support
This teleconference focused on the emotional health of families with young children, and the programs and services that have been proven successful in giving them a positive start. Guest Speaker Peggy Kaufman is the Director of the Center for Early Relationship Support at Jewish Family and Children’s Services, a Massachusetts agency that works to promote nurturing family attachments and ongoing networks of community support from the earliest days of family life. The Center offers a variety of programs, including therapeutic home visits for new families, feeding support, parent networks and support groups, interventions for new mothers facing postpartum depression, and health services for young parents and their children.

Creating State-Community Partnerships for Social-Emotional Well-being in Rural America

This Webinar was sponsored by the Federal Intra-agency Rural Behavioral Health Workgroup in collaboration with the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention, the National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health at Georgetown University, and the Technical Assistance Partnership. It introduced participants to several key federal grant programs to improve children’s mental and behavioral health including: CMHS Systems of Care, Safe Schools/Healthy Students, Circles of Care, National Child Traumatic Stress, Statewide Family Networks, and Suicide Prevention. Presenters discussed the benefits of not only building strong partnerships between state-level and community partners, but also enhancing linkages across federal grantee programs for community mental/behavioral health. The Webinar also provided opportunities for participants to explore current efforts and how challenges can be addressed to build a strong and effective voice for rural individuals in their communities and states.

Restorative Justice: An Alternative to Traditional Strategies for Violence Prevention and Intervention

Traditional disciplinary action is not always the most effective strategy in preventing violence or responding to negative behaviors. This teleconference described restorative practices in schools as an innovative alternative. Presenters provided an overview of different practices in schools and shared their experiences with the participants. They illustrated how parents and communities can resolve problems and repair harm through restorative measures.
