Positive Strategies for Engaging Latino Families

The following questions were discussed during the teleconference:

  • What is your school or community doing to reach out to Latino parents?
  • What strategies have been successful in dealing with language and/or cultural barriers?
  • How can we encourage Latino parents to participate actively in school meetings and other activities?
  • How can we learn from core Latino values such as familismo and respeto to involve parents and other family members in children's education and mental health?

Suicide Prevention for All: Planning and Implementing Culturally Competent Strategies

Latino Networking Group Teleconference

Speakers: Rich Lieberman, Coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Unit at the Los Angeles Unified School District; and LaVonne Ortega, Prevention Specialist at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center at Education Development Center, Inc.

The speakers addressed concrete strategies and described the resources that are important for all communities, with a focus on culturally-competent prevention techniques that are especially relevant to Latinos and other minority populations.
