This document highlights the experience of one high school that dramatically reduced suspensions and expulsions by implementing a comprehensive set of strategies focused on helping each student succeed. Through its 10-year Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative, The California Endowment foundation is helping 14 California communities develop environments where kids and youth are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. With guidance and support from the California school districts, school leaders and the entire school community came together to carry out the needed reforms. In doing so, they succeeded in creating a positive school climate characterized by high expectations for learning and achievement, a safe and caring environment, high student motivation and engagement, and partnerships with families and the community.
