New Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Brief The National Center, in partnership with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), has released a new prevention brief on the benefits of implementing Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) evidence-based programs in schools. SEL is the process by which children and young people acquire and develop skills that support learning, positive behavior, and constructive social relationships. Mental Health Treatment: Reporting on Concerns of Youth and Their Families Challenges and Opportunities in Children’s Mental Health: A View from Families and Youth (2006) by Sarah Dababnah and Janice Cooper of the National Center for Children in Poverty, examine the availability and effectiveness of mental health services from the perspective of youth and families seeking treatment. The authors concluded that although there are several best practice treatments in place, they identified “service limitations…lack of services integration, fiscal constraints, a weak infrastructure, and a sparse array of services” as major barriers to effective mental health treatment. Policy recommendations from youth and families involved in the study include strengthening policies that promote a strong family voice, strengthening the policy infrastructure, promoting early intervention, and emphasizing the importance of a culturally and linguistically competent mental health system. For more information, please read the full report at http://nccp.org/pub_ucr06a.html.

Addressing Student Dropout Prevention The National Governors Association (http://www.nga.org) released a briefing on student dropout prevention and recovery, Honoring Progress: An Update on the NGA Center Honor States, (August 2006). The report states that nearly one-fifth of students drop out of high school and one-third fail to graduate on time. The NGA encourages states to focus on both dropout prevention and recovery and recognizes the efforts of three states—Virginia, Georgia, and Indiana—for their efforts to keep students on track towards graduation.
