Youth Violence Perpetration: What Protects? What Predicts?
A research study described in the December issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health sought to examine risk and protective factors for violence perpetration among boys and girls. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, investigators found that risk factors predictive of violence perpetration included victimization, school and health problems, and friend suicide. However, protective factors, such as family and adult connectedness and religiosity, decreased the likelihood of perpetration, even with risk factors present. Investigators use these findings to support the use of dual strategies that reduce risk factors while promoting protective factors.

Can we measure school improvement?
In Schooling, Statistics, and Poverty: Can We Measure School Improvement?, Stephen Raudenbush of the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan examines two ways of using available test data to judge school effectiveness and improvement. Dr. Raudenbush concludes that these measures of test data are useful, but do not reveal evidence of the quality of school practice and discusses the flaws in the current accountability systems at the state and federal levels.
