C4S Online Course
This week marks Week 3 of our Creating Safe, Successful, and Supportive Schools (C4S) Online Learning Event. The highlight of this week will be Wednesday's TeleRadio Town Meeting. Using a format similar to a call-in radio show, experts, practitioners, and participants will explore how schools can enhance their capacity to promote wellness, improve academic achievement, and prevent substance abuse, violence, and other risk behaviors.

Guest speakers include co-authors David Osher and Kevin Dwyer, as well as Sandy Keenan from Westerly, Rhode Island, and Marianne Moon from Missoula, Montana.

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors is dedicated to serving the needs of the nation's public mental health system. NASMHPD provides technical assistance, policy development, and information dissemination to members who include commissioners/directors of the 55 state and territorial mental health departments.

New Feature

Racial and ethnic differences in school readiness
The Spring 2005 issue of the Future of Children, School Readiness: Closing Racial and Ethnic Gaps, examines children's lives before they begin school in an effort to understand how to close racial and ethnic gaps in school readiness and educational outcomes. The journal articles cover topics such as: testing children at school entry; family socioeconomic resources; genetics; neuroscience perspectives; low birth weight; health disparities; parenting; and early childhood care and education.

SAMHSA releases treatment protocol for co-occurring disorders
Using data from the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, SAMHSA has released a new Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) designed for mental health providers, substance abuse counselors, and other personnel who work with people with co-occurring disorders. Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders, TIP 42, provides counselors with principles, assessment instruments, strategies, settings and models for treating patients wherever they show for treatment.

Health and well-being of children of immigrants
The Urban Institute has released a report on the health and well-being of children under 6 in immigrant families. It covers immigration trends and impacts, family structure and work, risk factors for poor school performance, hardship and benefit use, health status and insurance coverage, and child care arrangements. The authors present policy implications and highlight issues for further research.

Truancy videoconference archive available online
An archived broadcast of the OJJDP/OSDFS event, "Strategies, Programs, and Resources to Prevent Truancy," is now available online. Originally broadcast on February 23rd, the videoconference provides an overview of the truancy issues addressed in the December 2004 conference "Partnering to Prevent Truancy: A National Priority," and showcases several promising, evidence-based program approaches to truancy and related issues.
